KeymasterIt came over the radio that it was a gang war. When my partner and I arrived at the scene, he was just standing there, watching the action, as bullets flew from every direction.
One even struck the squad car.
Jumping-out the passenger-side of the cruiser, I took cover behind the door, pulled my department-issued Glock 17, and ordered him to drop his weapon.
A damned sword- with a gold blade?!
My partner followed suit, as he turned to face us. He wore a black three-quarter length coat, black trousers, a black shirt, and black shoes, with some type of necklace that resembled what looked, to me, like an Egyptian ankh. The first thing that crossed my mind -afro and everything! – was: Original Black Panther!
But it’s 2024!
There was this weird look on his face, accompanied by eyes that glowed an eerie color of green. Man – did my hands start to shake! And when he – it spoke- I panicked and fired. Some kid, trying to use an aluminum garbage can lid for cover took the shot in the shoulder as the bullet ricocheted off the building behind him.
I was incredulous!
I mean, one second the guy was there- the next- he simply wasn’t! And I’m not just talking about him running away! I’m talking about him being so fast, that – when I opened fire- all I hit was the essence in the space that he had previously occupied! And, unfortunately, the kid behind him…
Now, I’m sitting outside the precinct taking extremely long pulls from my seventh consecutive cigarette, awaiting my turn to speak with internal affairs about the officer-involved shooting. My partner and I argued, just moments ago, about what exactly it was that we saw, we went to the restroom when we arrived, for some privacy, and to make sure that we were on the same page. But, since we weren’t, he grabbed me by the scruff-of-the-neck, slammed me against the wall, slapped me several times, then told me to wake up! Yet, it wasn’t me who was trying to ignore the fact that we had just witnessed something supernatural! ……Even so… that wasn’t what concerned me most- what had actually sent chills down my spine- what actually terrified me….
Before he disappeared into thin air, he laughed. Then he said-
This is only the beginning!
