Today we’re going to talk about Stanislav Moiseyev, the administrator of Hydra Market who received a life sentence in Russia. Hydra operated from 2015-2022 as one of the world’s largest darknet markets, amassing 17 million customers and 19,000 vendors with a peak value of 1.3 billion. The marketplace facilitated trade in drugs, counterfeit money, stolen credit cards, fake documents, and other services while offering financial services, including crypto laundering and ruble exchanges.

A joint operation between German and American authorities (FBI, DEA, IRS, Homeland Security) ended Hydra’s operations in April 2022, seizing 25 million in Bitcoin. The Moscow regional court convicted Moiseyev and 15 others. Russian authorities seized significant assets including cars, land, and real estate, discovering nearly a ton of narcotics in hidden compartments during raids.

Hydra utilized sophisticated money laundering through crypto mixing and an underground cash burial system called Klady, where couriers buried cash purchased with cryptocurrency for buyers to retrieve via coordinates. Half Hydra’s 2 billion cryptocurrency transactions in 2021-2022 came from illegal sources like ransomware and scams. The market operated using secure communication channels and dead drops for contactless drug distribution.
