Love — separated by steel. A gift or a curse? I won’t presume to speak for the women who fall in love with men behind bars, but I can certainly speak for the man who finds love outside these prison walls — while still within. I consider it a gift and a curse.

Since I’ve been in prison I can’t tell you how many times a woman has uttered those three, magic words – I love you. Well, actually, I could, but I won’t. Suffice it to say that it would require the use of more than one of my hands. Understand, I’m speaking of romantic love. And before some of you start thinking that I’m implying that I’m some irresistible lothario, I assure you that isn’t at all what I’m doing. It’s simply a matter of mathematics — the more time you do, the more opportunities you will have to hear those three words — and I’ve done a lot of time.

Still, despite the pain and disappointment that inevitably always seems to follow those three words, I love hearing them. Maybe it’s the hopeless romantic in me. After all, I am a Virgo. Or maybe those words have helped keep me tethered to my humanity while in a place that tries to strip me of it each and every day. Whatever it is, I will never try to run from it or deny it because rarely, if ever, will we find something more precious than loving or being loved. So, if you haven’t done it today, tell somebody you love them. You might change their life.
