KeymasterLuxuries: Something not necessary that provides comfort or enjoyment! Here in prison that may be a simple as a piece of toast or fresh brewed coffee. Or if you want to get real how about something you don’t normally think about. How about Freedom? Yes, freedom is a luxury, and you won’t find it in any ad campaign or celebrity endorsement. For us in prison that’s a big luxury! But even for you not in prison it also might be a luxury. I mean if you think about it you could be living in communist regime where you do as your told or suffer dire consequences. Or perhaps you were the victim or survivor of a heinous crime such as Domestic violence or murder in which case the trauma never leaves you so your never truly free. So see to some, freedom is truly a luxury. I’ve been incarcerated for over seventeen years and been to some really shitty prisons, some where people will stab you just for looking at them funny. To me just waking up and being alive is a luxury. I often laugh when I hear “Time is a luxury we just don’t have,” how about we trade places, cause Time is a luxury we have in abundance and would be more than happy to share.
Before I came to prison I always dreamed of owning a 1964 Ford Mustang, now there that’s a luxury. But alas NO, now a luxury is hoping someone will accept my phone calls, send me an email or have some compassion and send me a care package so I can have a cup of coffee. So there’s another luxury you guys have that I don’t: family and compassionate friends.
The next time you walk out your front door UNABATED and accidentally spill coffee on yourself or drop your price of toast remember that there are those in this world who wish they could.
So even though this topic is on Luxuries and that’s about things we covet or wish we had or even maybe something we take for granted think to yourself “Do I relish the true Luxuries I have, or do I need to lose them to truly know what I had?”Feel free to rebuttal, tell me your feelings or perhaps about something you feel is a luxury….
