Waupun Prison Walls Roared as Inmates Celebrated the Warden’s Arrest by Matthew Neumann

Waupun Correctional Institution (WCI) went on “full lockdown” 2yrs ago in March of 2023 and remains on limited movement still today. The Media only reports a small fraction of what’s really going on behind these walls of the oldest prison in the Midwest. In the wake of this historical lengthy lockdown, the FBI started an investigation probe due to all the “drugs & cellphones” being smuggled in, while the Dodge Co. Sheriff began investigating inmate deaths as potential homicides. When our TV’s were interrupted with “BREAKING NEWS”, cheers echoed as these old dungeon walls roared and rumbled to the howls of inmates celebrating the announcement or WCI Warden Randal Hepp’s arrest along with 15 other high ranking staff members including medical staff for smuggling drugs & contraband and the homicide of fellow inmate (Donald Maier -RIP) prison officials turned off his water for several days forcing him to drink his own toilet waste water.” We were forced to hear his cries for help all the way into his final death moans”. WCI remains on limited movement where we have only approximately 4 hours per week out of our 5×9 cells. The chow all remains closed forces us to eat all meals in our cells. The bakery remains closed, but our kitchen did finally open providing us hot meals 5 days per week. All inmate movement is staff escort only. Sadly, just as this dungeon was starting to open, we lost fellow inmate (Chris McDonald -RIP) to a hanging suicide and then another real young fella to an overdose, may he also RIP. Drugs and contraband remain significantly problematic in this dungeon, with some days producing 3 to 5 overdoses that require paramedics and ambulance which definitely interrupts prison operations with a medical lockdown.
