The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the Federal Prison Oversight Act, aiming to create an independent oversight body for the federal prison system. This bill mandates the Department of Justice’s inspector general to perform detailed inspections of all 122 Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facilities. An independent ombudsman will be established to investigate complaints from inmates and staff. This legislation comes in response to chronic issues within the BOP, including understaffing, poor facility conditions, and incidents of abuse and neglect.
