KeymasterAlright, let me set the scene: imagine being in prison and wanting to email your family or friends. Sounds easy, right? Nope. Instead of using Gmail or Yahoo, we’re stuck with Securus, a “prison-approved” service that feels like the Walmart version of communication. Oh, and it’s not free. Yep, you (or your people) gotta buy “stamps” to send each email. I’m talking 33 cents for one measly email—or cheaper if you buy in bulk, but still. Let me tell you, that’s where the frustration begins.
Picture this: I tell someone new, “Hey, download this app you’ve never heard of and pay to email me.” They’re like, “Bruh, is this a scam?” No, it’s not a scam, but I get why it sounds like one. And here’s the kicker—some folks use emails like texts. So, exchanges like:
Them: “What’s up?”
Me: “Not much, you?”
Them: “Same.”
Just cost almost a dollar. For real. That’s not communication; that’s daylight robbery. Now, I get that security is a thing, but if prisons want us to maintain healthy relationships, they need to make this easier—or at least cheaper. Studies show that inmates who stay connected to loved ones are more likely to succeed after release. It’s not rocket science. Strong relationships mean stronger support systems, fewer returns to prison, and better mental health while we’re here. Honestly, investing in these connections should be a no-brainer for everyone.
And let’s talk about what we bring to the table. Writing to an inmate isn’t just about supporting us; it’s about building real friendships. We’ve got stories, perspectives, and a level of appreciation for human connection that’s rare out there. Plus, we’ve got time to actually listen. You want deep conversations? You got it. You need advice or a new perspective? We’re here. It’s a two-way street, and it’s worth every penny.
Meanwhile, we’re over here wondering why Securus can’t be more like a cell phone plan. Unlimited emails and calls for a flat monthly fee? Yes, please. And speaking of calls, even though they’re cheaper than before, $1.56 for 30 minutes still adds up. International calls? Forget it. Those can hit $3 a minute. If anyone knows a cheap app for international numbers, help a guy out!
At the end of the day, staying in touch isn’t just about us inmates. It’s about creating meaningful, lasting bonds. And yeah, it might cost a little, but the payoff? Totally worth it. Let’s keep the conversation going—email me at jiovani.jsantiago@gmail.com. I’m always down to chat.
